Generations of Daughters
There is so much conversation about the rise of the feminine and the return of matriarchy. But there will be no rise of matriarchy, if no grows into motherhood. We are "reclaiming" our voices, our intuition, our power and our place in the world. Claiming to heal ancestral wounds and be the generational curse breaker because we are now ready to fight against our oppression but still not ready to become responsible for ourselves. Which leads me to believe we don’t want the responsibility of matriarchy... we just want the people we have assigned as care takers to do a better job.
Women have been stuck in a perpetual state of daughterhood. When I speak of daughter, I am not referring to a biological role. I am speaking about a way of being… Daughter consciousness is the tendency to look outside of ourselves for authority, approval, validation and direction. It is the part of us that waits to be chosen, recognized or to be told that we are enough before allowing ourselves to fully step into our lives. It is the conditioning that teaches us to seek safety through pleasing others rather than trusting ourselves.
Most of us were raised by women who were also operating from daughter consciousness. I am not making this statement from a place of judgement or because they failed us… because they inherited the same patterns. For generations, women were taught obedience over sovereignty, sacrifice over self-trust and caretaking over self-possession. Our mothers and grandmothers learned how to survive in systems that required them to suppress their instincts and their voices in order to seek security. It's without question that they carried immense wisdom, strength and resilience but they were denied the opportunity to fully embody their own authority. As a result, daughters raised daughters… who then raised more daughters.
We can see the effects of this inheritance… It appears in our fear of being seen, our difficulty setting boundaries, our tendency to over give, our perfectionism, our self-sabotage and our endless search for certainty. Even after years of personal development and healing work, most women still find themselves seeking permission before taking up space. We intellectualize our pain and trauma but continue to feel trapped by them emotionally. We know what we want but still are waiting for someone outside of us to give us permission to have it. We hear the call of our own becoming, yet wait for someone else to tell us it is safe to answer.
This is why healing eventually reaches a stale point. Initially the journey is about understanding our wounds, uncovering our conditioning and meeting the parts of ourselves that were neglected or abandoned. This work is sacred and necessary… but this is the work of the daughter. There comes a point when our spirit asks something more of us, It asks us to stop identifying solely as the wounded child and begin embodying the woman we are becoming. It asks us to move beyond awareness and into responsibility. It asks us to mature.
The archetype of the daughter plays an important role in this process. The daughter is curious, receptive, exploratory and full of possibility. She is discovering who she is through experience. Yet the purpose of the daughter is not to remain a daughter forever. The daughter is the initiation into motherhood and you cannot mother a child you don’t understand. There comes a moment when every woman is invited into a deeper initiation. A moment when life asks her to stop searching for the mother and become one. Not a mother to literal children but a mother to herself.
To become the mother is to cultivate an inner source of safety, wisdom and authority. It is to learn how to hold yourself through uncertainty rather than seeking someone else to rescue you from it. It is to trust your knowing even when it is unpopular. It is to nurture your dreams, protect your energy, honor your boundaries and remain rooted in your truth. The mother is not defined by how much she gives to others. She is defined by her capacity to remain connected to herself. A mother sees and understands the world deeply only because she sees the world as a reflection of herself. So there is no connection to be made externally if she is disconnected from herself.
This is the true work of Matriarchy. Not just awakening, but maturing… not just remembering our power but learning how to embody it. The world does not need more women who are endlessly healing without ever stepping into leadership of their own lives. It does not need more daughters waiting to be chosen. It needs women willing to become the authority they have spent their lives searching for. It needs women who can mother themselves, their communities, their creations and their visions.
The return of the matriarchy will not happen because we declare it. It will happen because women make the courageous journey from daughter consciousness into mother consciousness. It will happen when we stop outsourcing our worth, stop abandoning our intuition and stop waiting for permission to become who we are. The matriarchy returns every time a woman chooses self-trust over self-doubt, embodiment over performance and inner authority over external validation.
If this activated or triggered something within you… great! This is an invitation to come home to yourself and see yourself as worthy of your own love and care. If you want to dive head first into this work, I invite you to join my four-week return to self cohort. Together, we will explore the identities, patterns and inherited stories that keep us anchored to old versions of ourselves. This is a space for women who are ready to move beyond simply understanding their wounds and begin embodying a new way of being.
